School of Nursing and Midwifery

Learning and practicing skills

'Our students learning' is the philosophy that underpins the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Victoria University. Our staff are committed to innovation in research, and Learning in the Workplace and Community (LiWC) as part of work preparation.

We expect our student community to flourish as a result of our customisation of technology-enhanced learning and our strong partnerships with the health care industry.  We have a strong commitment to internationalisation of the curriculum to enable students to gain international experiences and to hosting students from off shore.

The School covers disciplinary areas of Nursing and Midwifery.  Both are accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.  We also offer honours program, postgraduate courses and research and higher degrees.  For detailed information about the courses in Nursing and Midwifery, visit the VU course finder.

The School operates at the St Albans campus which is planned to be the location of the University's Health Hub.

Nursing simulation labs

Students in our nursing program participate in simulation activities each year of their undergraduate course. The use of simulation learning in the classroom enables the student to gain exposure to a range of situations that they may not see in clinical experience. This provides the student with the opportunity to practice their skills in a safe environment.

With state-of-the-art technology, the nursing lab facilities are designed to simulate space and functions of an inpatient setting such as a hospital environment. Our simulation labs enable video recording from fixed cameras with live video streaming capabilities for greater student participation in learning.

Flexible clinical model

Flexible Clinical Model is the latest innovative program designed to enhance the student's clinical learning experience. The School is trialling the success of this program to offer students the opportunities to:

  • experience the true nature and challenges of contemporary nursing practice
  • work alongside expert clinicians
  • enjoy positive, and supportive clinical learning environments across the spectrum of nursing specialities

You can read about our innovative approach to clinical placement in a short case study published on the Department of Human Services website.

Clinical Learning

Clinical learning is a highly valued compulsory part of the School's courses that are accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.  Students are required to complete 100% of their clinical learning hours to be eligible for a certificate of completion and registration.

For further information about clinical learning and placements, visit the School of Nursing and Midwifery Clinical Learning Office.

Research

Our research in nursing and midwifery is built upon evidence-based knowledge about the work we have undertaken with our communities in assisting them to meet challenges and to enhance communities both locally and globally.
