Recognise and Respond to Elder Abuse

Delivered by the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre, this is the first of a series of two workshops which aims to strengthen the capacity of the Victorian workforce to identify and respond to elder abuse. 

This workshop is offered to all workers. It can be offered as a stand alone education session for the direct care workforce but it is also a prerequisite for those going on to complete workshop 2: Recognise, Respond to and Assess Elder Abuse.

Course contents

  • Orientation to the definition and incidence of elder abuse.
  • The empowerment model and the protection of human rights.
  • Introduction to the legal and policy framework.
  • Signs of abuse – what should I look for?
  • Acting on suspicion of abuse- when should I say something?
  • Resources- what supports/services are available?
  • Elder abuse in a diverse community.

The training will be largely activity based including videos and discussions, case studies and group work. You will be given a workbook to work through during the training which will contain useful resources for you to take back to your workplace.
