Develop your literacy and communications skills to prepare for the Occupational English Test (OET). This course will be beneficial if you are an overseas qualified Health Professional in either medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, dietetics, podiatry, physiotherapy, radiography, occupational therapy, optometry, speech therapy or veterinary science who:

  • already has an advanced level of English
  • is able to work independently by accessing computer-based materials. 

This course will also be beneficial if you have already passed the OET but want to improve your general medical communication.

Course Objectives

This course:

  • develops skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and pronunciation
  • provides practice in tasks typical of the Occupational English Test.

Experienced teachers provide individual instruction in Speaking and Writing as well as feedback for Reading and Listening. 

This course is delivered on-line via computer which means: 

  • you don’t attend on-campus classes
  • you can either study using your computer at home, or visit any Victoria University campus to use student access computers
  • you submit tasks to your teacher on-line and receive individual feedback. 

On enrolment, you will be allocated a computer password which gives you access to study this module on-line.

Course contents

The following skills set required for the Preparation for the Occupational English Test is based on elements from 21937VIC Certificate IV in ESL (Employment/Professional).

▪ Participate in formal conversations in English (20hrs - from VPAU506 Analyse and participate in complex conversations)

▪ Demonstrate critical understanding of a range of information from an oral presentation (20 hrs - from VPAU518 Present and listen to complex oral presentations in an employment or professional context)

▪ Interpret complex formal written workplace communications (20hrs - from VPAU520 Read and write complex texts for employment)

▪ Communicate an opinion, request or suggestion in an informal written message (20 hrs - from VPAU520 Read and write complex texts for employment)

Admission Information

This course has the following prerequisite: All students will be doing the OET exam. The prerequisites for entry into the course are that the applicant has a recognised overseas qualification in their relevant profession and that they have a suitable level of English.
