Delivered by the Victoria Graduate School of Business (VGSB), VU's Master of Accounting offers a choice of three streams of study:  

  • Professional Qualification: for those who do not hold an accounting degree. Qualifies you as an accountant and satisfies the educational requirements for Associate Membership of The Professional Accounting Bodies
  • Professional Accounting Education: for those with an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in accounting who want choice of subjects for their continuing professional education
  • Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA): for those with a professionally recognised accounting qualification who wish to complete their educational requirement for CPA status within a Masters program.

The Master of Accounting is professionally recognised with accreditation from CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia.

Exemptions are available for completed units in the CPA Foundation and Professional Programs and The ICAA Chartered Accountants Progam . Please contact the course co ordinator for further details.

Course Objectives

The objectives of the Master of Accounting include:

  • The opportunity for students to gain technical skills and conceptual knowledge in financial accounting, management accounting, finance, auditing and assurance, commercial and corporations law, taxation, information systems, economics and quantitative methods essential for the professional accountant in today s global environment.
  • Developing generic skills commonly applied in practice and valued by employers and professional bodies including analytic, appreciative, personal and interpersonal skills.
  • The opportunity for students with a Bachelor degree in other disciplines to gain entry to the accounting profession.
  • A course of study more closely aligned to professional accounting requirements by reducing duplication of curriculum areas.

Units and electives

The course consists of 12 units of study to be undertaken through one of three options.

Option One
Students entering with an undergraduate degree in Accounting and wishing to enhance their accounting skills will undertake the following units of study.

Eight units of study from

Plus

or

or three further units of study approved by the School of Accounting and Finance.

Option Two
Students entering with an undergraduate degree in Accounting and wishing to obtain specialist professional accounting qualifications will undertake the following units of study.

Plus six units of study from

Plus three units of study from

Option Three
Students entering with an undergraduate degree from a discipline other than accounting will undertake the following units of study.

Plus one unit of study approved by the School of Accounting and Finance from

Plus four units of study approved by the School of Accounting and Finance from

Electives: An additional specialisation of 2 coursework units may include further specialisation in finance or accounting or in another area approved by the Course Coordinator.

On completion of eight approved units of study, students who choose to exit this course will be eligible to receive the Graduate Diploma in Professional Accounting. On completion of four approved units of study, students who choose to exit this course will be eligible to receive the Graduate Certificate in Business.

What's a unit?

A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.

Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take, and optional 'elective' units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.

Credits

Each unit is worth a set amount of study credits based on the amount of time you study. Generally, 1 credit is equal to 1 hour of study per week.

Admission Information

  • Year 12:

    To qualify for admission to the course an applicant must have normally completed a relevant degree or graduate diploma and be employed in or intend to be employed in a position associated with accounting. In addition to the requirements listed above, overseas applicants must have a minimum proficiency in the English language as demonstrated by: International English Language Testing System overall score of 6.5 and no individual band score less than 6.
