Master of TESOL

Broaden your career horizons as you study in the workplace. Get an overview of the current issues in TESOL, complete practice placements and graduate with a professional qualification.

Masters graduates who do not have teaching qualifications will still gain a recognised TESOL qualification. However, in Australia they are limited to TESOL teaching programs where a teaching qualification is not a requirement.

The Masters is the final stage of a nested suite of three courses. The first stage is the Graduate Certificate in TESOL, and the second stage is the Graduate Diploma in TESOL. You can enter and leave at any stage; completion of one stage gives you credit towards the next.

Course Objectives

Graduates of this course will be able to:

  1. Analyse English language learners’ needs;
  2. Design, implement, assess and evaluate English as a second or additional language curricula and pedagogical programs that are locally, nationally and internationally applicable;
  3. Implement English as a second or additional language learning programs that are underpinned by researched principles of language teaching and a thorough knowledge of the systems of the English language;
  4. Undertake applied research relevant to their professional responsibilities and interests in the area of TESOL;
  5. Apply the theoretical and practical learning opportunities provided in each unit of study to become accomplished TESOL practitioners;
  6. Utilise their enhanced teaching skills and understanding of educational processes to work effectively in second language contexts;
  7. Confidently seek employment opportunities for English as a second or additional language teachers in a wide range of local, national and international contexts;
  8. Extend their existing professional careers in education by achieving a recognised specialist area qualification;
  9. Demonstrate understanding of the English as a second or additional language teaching profession in local, national and international contexts.

Units and electives

After successful completion of the requirements of the Graduate Diploma in TESOL (year 1 below):

  • Onshore students have two options to complete the Masters: Minor Thesis or Coursework;
  • Offshore students complete three specified units - 3 x 24 credit points (after receiving 72 credit points advanced standing for completing the Graduate Diploma in TESOL from either Hanoi University or Ho Chi Minh City Open University)

What's a unit?

A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.

Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take, and optional 'elective' units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.

Credits

Each unit is worth a set amount of study credits based on the amount of time you study. Generally, 1 credit is equal to 1 hour of study per week.

Admission Information

  • International: To qualify for admission to the Master of TESOL, applicants must have successfully completed an approved Graduate Diploma in TESOL at a minimum average of ‘Distinction’ (70%) or equivalent. All applicants must have a minimum IELTS of 7.0 overall (no band less than 6.0) or approved equivalent.
  • Mature: To qualify for admission to the Master of TESOL, applicants must have successfully completed an approved Graduate Diploma in TESOL at a minimum average of ‘Distinction’ (70%) or equivalent. Applicants who are working towards teacher registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) need to be aware of the VIT’s English Language Competence Policy and requirements.
  • Other: English Language Proficiency: All applicants must have a minimum overall IELTS score of 7.0 (no band less than 6.0) or approved equivalent. Applicants who are working towards teacher registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) need to be aware of the VIT’s English Language Competence Policy and requirements.
