Becoming a research candidate
Undertaking a research degree at VU is a great way to enhance your career. You will develop advanced skills in research, critical thinking and problem-solving. Our graduate researchers value the quality research supervision we provide and know that our training programs support their learning and development.
To undertake a PhD, Masters by Research or professional doctorate program (e.g DBA, DPsych) at VU, you will need to follow the six steps to becoming a research student.

Postgraduate coursework programs
Refer to the Postgraduate Course Index for a current list of postgraduate coursework programs that are accepting applications. (You can also search for postgraduate courses if you know what you're looking for).
To apply for programs available via direct entry, complete and submit a direct entry application form by the relevant closing date.
When you're ready to apply for a postgraduate coursework program that is available via direct entry, you need to:
- Read the Advice to applicants (contains details about how to apply for your course, extra requirements, what happens when you submit your application and other important information).
- Complete and submit a direct entry application form by the relevant closing date listed in the course index or on the course page.
- As part of your application you may also be required to complete extra requirements (which the course page would indicate) or complete supplementary forms (eg. special consideration, referee reports).
International applicants
If you are not a permanent Australian resident, New Zealand or Australian citizen, you will need to follow specific steps for your application.
