Diploma graduates who do not have teaching qualifications will still gain a recognised TESOL qualification. However, in Australia they are limited to TESOL teaching programs where a teaching qualification is not a requirement.
This diploma provides credit towards the Master of Education in TESOL. To be admitted to the Masters course you must complete the diploma with a minimum average of second-class honours.

Course Objectives
Graduates of this course will be able to:
- Analyse English language learners’ needs;
- Design, implement, assess and evaluate English as a second or additional language curricula and pedagogical programs that are locally, nationally and internationally applicable;
- Implement English as a second or additional language learning programs that are underpinned by researched principles of language teaching and a thorough knowledge of the systems of the English language;
- Undertake applied research relevant to their professional responsibilities and interests in the area of TESOL;
- apply the theoretical and practical learning opportunities provided in each unit of study to become accomplished TESOL practitioners;
- Utilise their enhanced teaching skills and understanding of educational processes to work effectively in second language contexts;
- Confidently seek employment opportunities for English as a second or additional language teachers in a wide range of local, national and international contexts;
- Extend their existing professional careers in education by achieving a recognised specialist area qualification;
- Understand the English as a second or additional language teaching profession in local, national and international contexts.
Units and electives
NOTE: This course is part of a postgraduate program which also includes ATTL Graduate Certificate in TESOL and AMTL Master of TESOL. The Graduate Diploma in TESOL comprises six units of study: AEG5123, AEG5124, AEG5125, AEG5126, ACA5021 and ACA5022. These units of study are related to TESOL methodology, the nature of the English language, second language acquisition, literacy, sociolinguistics and the institutional contexts of English language teaching. AEG5123 is a prerequisite for AEG5124 and AEG5126. International students must seek advice from the course coordinator before enrolling in AEG5124 'Professional Practice TESOL'. If this unit is not recommended or not required by international students, they can choose one of the units from the Master of Education (AMEB) course. Local students seeking accreditation with bodies such as the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) or the National English Language Teaching Accreditation System (NEAS) must complete AEG5124 Professional Practice - TESOL.

What's a unit?
A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.
Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take, and optional 'elective' units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.
Credits
Each unit is worth a set amount of study credits based on the amount of time you study. Generally, 1 credit is equal to 1 hour of study per week.
Admission Information
- International: The admission requirement for the Graduate Diploma in TESOL course is an approved three year first degree. All applicants must have a minimum IELTS of 7.0 overall (no band less than 6.0) or approved equivalent.
- Mature: To qualify for admission to the Graduate Diploma in TESOL applicants must have a recognised Australian teaching qualification of at least four years' duration or equivalent. An applicant with a recognised Australian degree of at least three years' duration or equivalent may apply for this course based on a commitment to work in TESOL programs for which a general teaching qualification is not a requirement. In such cases, the Graduate Diploma in TESOL may provide a recognised TESOL qualification but will not qualify candidates to teach in most Australian schools. Applicants who are working towards teacher registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) need to be aware of the VIT's English Language Competence Policy and requirements.
- Other: English Language Proficiency: All applicants must have a minimum overall IELTS score of 7.0 (no band less than 6.0) or approved equivalent. Applicants who are working towards teacher registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) need to be aware of the VIT’s English Language Competence Policy and requirements.
