The Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Education (GCTE) is designed for:
- teaching staff who are new to VU and are required to undertake the course as part of their extended induction program
- other VU teaching staff who wish to engage in formal professional learning.
It focuses on
- the development of teaching competence in the classroom
- understanding of the Australian tertiary education and training system
- information literacy in the field of tertiary education
- critical reflection on teaching
The aim of the course is to improve your teaching practice. Its cross-sectoral orientation is designed to encourage understanding across the sectors.

What's a unit?
A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.
Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take, and optional 'elective' units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.
Credits
Each unit is worth a set amount of study credits based on the amount of time you study. Generally, 1 credit is equal to 1 hour of study per week.
Admission Information
- Mature: To qualify for admission to the course, applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate degree or an equivalent qualification, as approved by the School of Education. In addition, the applicant must currently have a teaching role in a tertiary institution.
