The English Language Institute delivers a range of English Language Programs consisting of several different streams, as outlined below.

General English

For students with beginner to intermediate levels of English this stream will help you:

  • improve your English language for everyday use
  • develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • develop the required English language proficiency to gain entry to an English For Academic Purposes stream.

English For Academic Purposes

This stream is designed for students from an upper intermediate to advanced level of English who want to get into an Australian TAFE, undergraduate or postgraduate course. The EAP stream consists of the following courses:

  • Upper Intermediate/Advanced For students who want to further develop their academic language skills and study a TAFE course at VU.
  • Direct Entry University Preparation - Undergraduate (UPU) For students with an advanced level of English who wish to enrol in a VU undergraduate course. You must meet VU's undergraduate entry requirements to enrol in this course.
  • Direct Entry University Preparation - Post Graduate (UPP) For students with an advanced level of English who wish to enrol in a VU postgraduate course. You must meet VU's postgraduate entry requirements to enrol in this course.

IELTS Preparation

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) a world recognised English test. We offer 2 courses that will help you prepare for the IELTS test.

  • IELTS Preparation (General) Offered at an upper intermediate level, this course is for students who want to gain an IELTS 7 in the general model and develop work-related skills to gain relevant work experience in Australia.
  • IELTS Preparation (Academic) Offered at upper-intermediate level for students preparing to sit the IELTS. This course will help you:
    • improve your general level of English proficiency
    • become familiar with the IELTS format
    • improve your IELTS test-taking strategies.

English For Overseas Teachers Of English

This 10 week course has been designed for students wanting develop their own teaching skills in the TESOL field. The aim of the course is to develop both your language proficiency and academic skills to assist you to more satisfactorily teach English in your own country and/or seek entry into the postgraduate course in TESOL at VU.

English For Health Sciences

This 10 week course has been designed for students wishing to undertake tertiary level study in the Health Sciences in Australia. It provides you with knowledge about the Health Sciences, in particular human anatomy and various body systems. It also provides students with information about current health care issues and with the speaking and writing skills to discuss and offer opinions on these issues.

English for Business

The 10 week upper intermediate English for Business course is designed for students who are planning to enter mainstream business.
The English for Business course offers authentic materials, both spoken and written, taken from contemporary business situations from a range of resources. This allows you to participate in activities that will improve your understanding of business vocabulary, concepts and conventions.

English for Sport

English for Sport will be delivered in two five week modules. The aim of the course is to improve the transition and language proficiency of ELI students on a pathway to the Diploma of Sport through the study of discipline specific subject content, language and vocabulary.

Entry Levels

The General English courses can stand alone or can articulate into various English for Specific Purposes type courses after reaching the intermediate level such as English for Academic Purposes. Flexible entry and exit arrangements are possible. Units of Study

English For Academic Purposes Entry Levels

Upper Intermediate TAFE Preparation-Level 4 University Preparation Undergraduate (UPU) Level 5 University Preparation Postgraduate Level 6 The above entry levels in the EAP stream consist of the following:

  • EAP - Upper Intermediate Level 4; this course develops students academic language skills for entry into VU TAFE courses;
  • EAP - University Preparation Undergraduate (UPU) for VU undergraduate entry; successful completion of this specialised 10-week program gives students entry to VU undergraduate courses; and
  • EAP - University Preparation Postgraduate (UPP) for VU postgraduate entry; successful completion of this specialised 10-week course gives students entry to VU postgraduate courses which require IELTS 6.5 with no subtest below 6.0. Please note that for postgraduate courses in Law and Education which require IELTS 7.0 with no subtests below 6, you must achieve an overall 70% on the UPU course and/or submit an IELTS score of 7.0 with no subtest below 6.0.

IELTS Preparation

The course is structured thematically and teaches the IELTS testing areas - reading, writing, listening and speaking through the following themes:

There are multiple entry and exit points for students doing the IELTS Preparation course. Official IELTS test results can be used to gain entry into further English courses or into mainstream courses at Victoria University or at other tertiary institutions.

English For Health Sciences

English for Business

The English for Business Course (EFB) will prepare students to successfully participate in tertiary business courses. The course will be divided into two five-week programs; English for Business 1 Upper Intermediate and English for Business 2 Upper Intermediate. Students may enter at the beginning of each five-week module.

The first five week module aims to develop academic written and spoken communication skills focussing on understanding the structure and function of companies with emphasis on company structure, company performance, products, marketing and advertising.

The second five-week module aims to develop academic written and spoken communication skills focussing on international business styles, managing people and businesses across cultures, globalisation and business ethics.

English for Sport

The course will be divided into two five week programs, English for Sport 1 - Upper Intermediate and English for Sport 2 - Upper Intermediate. After satisfactory completion of English for Sport 1 and 2 students will be eligible for direct entry into the Certificate IV in Sport or the Diploma of Sport at VU which articulates into the Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management.

The course is based around a number of key outcomes in the following topic areas. These include:

  • Sport

  • Sport Psychology
  • Nutrition and diet
  • Coaching (Roles, styles)
  • Sport Safety

Course structure
On arrival, all students sit an English proficiency test. They are then placed in a class depending on their language proficiency and intended VE/HE pathway. Students are assessed at each five or 10 week point and may progress to another stream if they have met the English language requirements for that particular stream. Students receive a recommendation letter to enrol in their mainstream course when they have satisfactorily met the published English language entry requirements.

Admission Information

General English

The English level for this course depends on the level of the stream undertaken. Entry levels range from Elementary (IELTS 3) to Intermediate (IELTS 4).

English For Academic Purposes

The English level for this course depends on the level of the stream undertaken. Entry levels range from Upper Intermediate (IELTS 5) to Advanced (IELTS 6).

IELTS Preparation

The English entry level for this course is Upper Intermediate (IELTS 5).

English For Overseas Teachers Of English

The prerequisite is Academic IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 580+ TWE 5 and a teaching qualification or teaching experience.

English For Health Sciences

The English entry level for this course is Upper Intermediate. Alternatively, students must have an academic IELTS score of 5.5 with no band below 5.0.

English for Business

The entry level into EFB requires is Upper Intermediate (IELTS 5).

English for Sport

The entry level into EFS requires students to have achieved Intermediate Level/IELTS 5 in all skills. Depending on the student’s English language proficiency, students can enter English for Sport 2 and providing that they meet course outcomes can still be eligible for entry into the Certificate IV in Sport or the Diploma of Sport.
