English courses overview

If you want to study in Australia or simply improve your everyday English you can find the right course at Victoria University (VU). At our English Language Institute (ELI) we offer a variety of courses at different levels. These include:

  • General English (GE)
  • English for Business
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) preparation
  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP) for TAFE, undergraduate and postgraduate preparation

General English (GE)

For students with beginner to intermediate levels of English the General English course will help you:

  • improve your English language for everyday use
  • develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • develop the required English language proficiency to gain entry to an English For Academic Purposes course.

English for Business

English for Business is for students with intermediate levels of English (minimum IELTS 5). This course will allow you to:

  • improve your English language proficiency and academic literacy skills in a business context
  • develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • help you gain entrance into VU TAFE business courses.

Upon completion of the course it is expected that you will achieve upper intermediate level or IELTS 5.5.

IELTS preparation

General

Offered at a lower intermediate level, the General IELTS preparation course is for students who want to gain an IELTS 7 in the general model and develop work-related skills to gain relevant work experience in Australia.

Academic

Offered at upper-intermediate level for students preparing to sit the IELTS, the Academic IELTS preparation course will help you improve your general level of English proficiency, become familiar with the IELTS format and improve your IELTS test-taking strategies.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Designed for students with an advanced level of English who want to gain admission to an Australian TAFE, undergraduate or postgraduate course. The EAP stream consists of the following courses:

  • Intermediate
    Students will be introduced to basic academic language skills and given an insight into Australian academic culture.
  • Upper Intermediate/Advanced
    For students who want to further develop their academic language skills and study a TAFE course at VU.
  • Direct Entry University Preparation Undergraduate (UPU)
    For students with an advanced level of English who wish to enrol in a VU undergraduate course. You must meet VU's undergraduate entry requirements to enrol in this course.
  • Direct Entry University Preparation Postgraduate (UPP)
    For students with an advanced level of English who wish to enrol in a VU postgraduate course. You must meet VU's postgraduate entry requirements to enrol in this course.

Additional University Preparation Postgraduate Course at ELI (UPP) (January 3 to February 24 2012)

ELI is offering an additional postgraduate preparation course (UPP) from January 3 to February 24 2012. This is an ELI direct entry course and successful completion of this course allows students to be recommended into postgraduate study at VU in Semester 1 2012.

The course runs for 8 weeks with increased weekly tuition hours to make it equivalent to the standard 10 week ELI UPP course. This intensive English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course develops the academic language skills required for successful study at postgraduate level at VU in Semester 1 2012. You must meet VU's postgraduate entry requirements to enrol in this course.

English for Sport

This course is designed for students with an upper intermediate level of English and appropriate academic background who want to study sport courses such as Certificate IV in Sport and Diploma of Sport.

The course can be customised to focus on a particular sport, such as Taekwondo, depending on the needs and background of the participants.

The course focuses on improving speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as introducing students to content delivered in the Diploma of Sport. Topics covered include:

  • the athlete
  • coaching styles and techniques
  • sport safety and first aid
  • nutrition and diet.

Customised Study Tours

Victoria University offers a wide range of personalised study tours for international students, industry, educational institutes and government groups. We design customised courses so you can develop English language proficiency in your area of interest or expertise while experiencing Australian culture. Some study tours we organise are:

For overseas teachers

Offered at a range of levels the English for Overseas Teachers of English course can include English Language extension, instruction and practice in teaching methods and course delivery and evaluation. It is for teachers who want to:

  • teach English in their own country
  • gain entry into postgraduate Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at VU
  • gain professional development.

For Health Science students and professionals

Offered subject to demand, the English for Health Sciences course is at an upper intermediate level. It will prepare you for further study or employment in the health sciences area.

For English for Sport students and professionals

There are two kinds of study tours available: Generic Sport and Taekwondo.
