Graduate certificate

A graduate certificate will build on the skills and knowledge you developed in your undergraduate degree, or help you develop vocational skills in a new area. Depending on the subject area, you may be eligible to undertake further postgraduate study when you have completed your graduate certificate.

Entry requirements: Applicants typically require a bachelor degree, advanced diploma or equivalent. Work experience may also be taken into consideration.

Duration: A graduate certificate requires one semester of full-time study.

Graduate diploma

A graduate diploma will help you develop new knowledge and specialised skills in an area not previously studied in your undergraduate degree. Completion of a graduate diploma may be recognised as part of a Masters degree.

Entry: Applicants typically require a bachelor degree or diploma, however exceptions may apply where appropriate work experience can be demonstrated.

Duration: A graduate diploma requires two semesters of full-time study.

Masters degree by coursework

A masters degree enhances your professional skills and understanding of a specific area of knowledge. One of the advantages of a masters by coursework is the support and guidance you receive in tutorials, from tutors and other students.

Entry: Applicants normally require a bachelor degree, honours degree or graduate diploma for entry into a masters. If you do not have formal qualifications but possess relevant academic or professional experience, you may qualify for admission to a masters upon completion of a preliminary program.

Duration: A masters requires three to four semesters of full-time study.

Learning pathways

Many of the postgraduate programs offer a pathway or full articulation between courses. This means a graduate certificate provides one semester’s credit towards a graduate diploma, which in turn provides two semesters’ credit towards a masters degree by coursework.

As a postgraduate coursework student you are invited to apply for a higher education scholarship. The scholarship program is part of a funding partnership between VU and the University of Melbourne. Additional scholarship opportunities may also be available.
