Bachelor of Business (Tourism Management)

Equip yourself with the skills and knowledge to develop, operate, manage and market sustainable tourism businesses and destinations. Gain the theoretical and practical knowledge required to design and deliver tourism products and experiences, and to apply effective business management techniques to the operation of tourism enterprises.

You will learn about current trends and issues facing the tourism industry, the meaning and practice of tourism planning and sustainable destination management, and project methodologies and investigation techniques to better understand and solve problems facing tourism organisations. You will also benefit from the compulsory one-year, full-time co-operative education component, allowing you to apply new skills in a real work environment.

This course has been awarded EPAS accreditation by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).

The Bachelor of Business gives you options to tailor your learning to your specific needs. All students study  a common first year which is complemented in second and third years by specialisations in either two business disciplines, or a single specialisation and an area of study.

Study pathways

VU TAFE to undergraduate

You can get credit in the (BBUS-BSPTOM) if you have studied one of these TAFE courses at VU:

Certificate 4 in Tourism

  • You may get up to half a year of credit.

Diploma of Business (Enterprise)

  • You may get up to a year of credit.

Transferring to VU

You can get credit in the (BBUS-BSPTOM) for study you have done at other universities. We have formal credit transfer arrangements for this course with the following universities

  • If you studied the Bachelor of Arts (International Tourism Management) you may get up to one and a half years of credit.

Universidad de Monterrey

  • If you studied the Bachelor in International Tourism you may get up to one and a half years of credit.

Guilford Training Centre

  • If you studied the Diploma of Hotel Management you may get up to a year of credit.

Students will develop the knowledge and ability to develop, operate, manage and market sustainable tourism businesses and destinations. The goal of the course is to help students develop a broad business knowledge of the major operating areas of the tourism industry and enable them to pursue a broad spectrum of tourism management careers.

Specialisation Requirements
Students are required to successfully complete all seven units of study. Further, those who choose to study this specialisation must complete a year of compulsory industry experience by undertaking BBB3001 Co-operative Education 1 and BBB3002 Co-operative Education 2 in place of BFP2100 Professional Development 2 - Analysis and Strategy and BFP3001 Professional Development 3 as part of the Bachelor of Business program. This will extend the length of the program by 1 year.

Seven elective units of study

OR

Specialisation Two - seven units of study

OR

The combination of an Area of Study* chosen from business, legal studies, arts, science, health or engineering with electives totalling seven units of study

What's a unit?

A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.

Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take, and optional 'elective' units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.

Credits

Each unit is worth a set amount of study credits based on the amount of time you study. Generally, 1 credit is equal to 1 hour of study per week.

Admission Information

  • Year 12:

    To qualify for admission to the course, an applicant must have successfully completed a course of study at year 12 or equivalent*.

    Year 12 Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 - study score of at least 20 in English (any).

    Selection Mode: Current Year 12 applicants: Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) and two-stage process with a middle-band of approximately 20%. Non-current year 12 applicants: ENTER and/or academic record*.

    Middle-band: consideration is given to performance in the full range of VCE studies undertaken.

    * Applicants who have not completed Year 12 but who possess appropriate educational qualifications, work or life experiences which would enable them to successfully undertake the course, will be considered for admission.

    In addition to satisfying the entry requirements for Australian resident students or demonstrating equivalence, overseas students must provide evidence of proficiency in the English language: International English Language Testing System - overall score of 6 and no individual band score less than 6.0.
