Gain the skills and knowledge to develop, operate, manage and market sustainable tourism products, experiences, businesses and destinations. You’ll develop the knowledge and understanding of current international trends and issues facing the tourism industry so that you can manage problems that challenge tourism organisations in diverse cultures and settings.

This course has been awarded EPAS accreditation by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).

The course contains 24 units incorporating core business units, specialist units, elective units and a stream of professional development units. You’ll get practical training through a paid compulsory-one year full-time co-operative education assignment in third year. You can complete a second area of specialisation in addition to international tourism management.

Course Objectives

Students will develop the knowledge and ability to develop, operate, manage and market sustainable tourism businesses and destinations. The goal of the course is to help students develop a broad business knowledge of the major operating areas of the tourism industry and enable them to pursue a broad spectrum of tourism management careers.

Students are required to successfully complete all seven units of study.

Further, those who choose to study this specialisation must complete a year of compulsory industry experience by undertaking BBB3001 Co-operative Education 1 and BBB3002 Co-operative Education 2 as part of the Bachelor of Business program. This will extend the length of the program by 1 year.

Students need to register on-line for Co-operative Education and be prepared to undertake the Work Integrated Learning/Co-operative Education Preparation Program in Year 2. (Contact the Centre in G348/FP for details and refer to the Faculty Timetable).

Specialisation Two - seven units of study

The combination of an Area of Study* chosen from business, legal studies, arts, science, health or engineering with electives totalling seven units of study

* An Area of Study is defined as five units of study approved by the course coordinator selected from a specialisation.

What's a unit?

A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.

Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take, and optional 'elective' units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.

Credits

Each unit is worth a set amount of study credits based on the amount of time you study. Generally, 1 credit is equal to 1 hour of study per week.

Admission Information

  • Year 12:

    To qualify for admission to the course, an applicant must have successfully completed a course of study at year 12 or equivalent*.

    Year 12 Prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 - study score of at least 20 in English (any).

    Selection Mode: Current Year 12 applicants: Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) and two-stage process with a middle-band of approximately 20%. Non-current year 12 applicants: ENTER and/or academic record*.

    Middle-band: consideration is given to performance in the full range of VCE studies undertaken.

    * Applicants who have not completed Year 12 but who possess appropriate educational qualifications, work or life experiences which would enable them to successfully undertake the course, will be considered for admission.

    In addition to satisfying the entry requirements for Australian resident students or demonstrating equivalence, overseas students must provide evidence of proficiency in the English language: International English Language Testing System - overall score of 6 and no individual band score less than 6.0.
