The Making VU Program commenced in April 2007 to deliver the University’s strategic direction, ‘Making VU 2016: A Statement of Purpose’.
In 2007 Victoria University (VU) embarked on a major repositioning of its core teaching and research activities. This ensured closer alignment to the changing needs of students, enterprises and communities. During this time a dedicated team of specialists, led by Professor Brian King, engaged with many levels of VU to advance the strategy based on five commitments.
By December 2009 the program had progressed to a point where most these commitments had been embedded into the University. Between January and March 2010, the team will be finalising the program, capturing learnings and ensuring all stakeholders are engaged and committed.

An important part of achieving the Making VU vision is our ability to operate as "One university", realising the full potential of our multi-sector capabilities in education, training and research. This means valuing the contribution that each sector, faculty and staff member makes in helping to transform the lives of people. The five commitments of the Making VU program are listed below.
To focus on 12 industry and community clusters in which VU has strong education and research capabilities and align them more effectively with future needs, with input from roundtables chaired by prominent industry and community leaders.
To make at least 25% learning in the workplace and community a universal feature of VU courses.
To provide students with the ability to customise their learning experience around course choice and learning support, to best meet their current needs and future demands.
To reshape VU vocational and workplace education for the greater benefit of students, and for connecting enterprises with the workforce development services they require to up-skill and re-skill their existing workers.
To resource three initiatives for a better life in Melbourne's western suburbs and to share this knowledge with other communities in Australia or overseas that may face similar challenges.
As the program is embedded into the University, capturing and sharing knowledge has become a priority. From 2010 onwards, the University intends to build individual and institutional capability to achieve the vision articulated in the Making VU strategy.
Many aspects of VU have started to change as a result of the program, and this will continue. Ultimately, the five commitments of the Making VU program will make VU a university of first choice for students, enterprises and staff.
