Professor Stephen W. Bigger graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science and PhD from The University of Melbourne. His PhD was awarded in the applied chemistry field of polymer photo-degradation and stabilisation. Following this he was appointed as a lecturer in physical chemistry at the University of Melbourne where he worked for six years before taking up an academic position at Victoria University in 1991.

He has published over 140 refereed papers and conference presentations in his research field and was Head, School of Molecular Sciences prior to his current appointment.

Professor Bigger is a researcher of international standing in the field of polymer degradation and stabilisation and has also published widely in the refereed educational literature in chemistry. He has served on committees for the advancement of chemical education such as the Chemistry Education Association executive committee and has been appointed as subject specialist vetter for VCE Chemistry examinations by the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority.

He has been a recipient of the Vice Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence and the Vice Chancellor's Award for Research Supervision at Victoria University as well as an Australian Learning and Teaching Council citation for developing and disseminating over a sustained period original and innovative approaches to teaching chemistry to students with diverse backgrounds and interests.

Professor Bigger chairs various committees within the Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science and sits on several senior committees of VU.
