VU VCE Students

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is a senior secondary school qualification which is a prerequisite for entry into degree courses.  VCE at VU College is the same VCE course offered in secondary schools tailored for adults returning to study.

Course duration

If you are an adult returning to study* you can complete VCE in one year full time or part time over two or more years. If you study full time you must enrol in four or more subjects.  Part time students can enrol in up to three subjects.

If you are not an adult returning to study you must complete Year 11 and Year 12 to obtain your VCE.  This is generally completed in two years or part time equivalent.

*You are an 'adult returning to study' if you are 18 years of age on 1 January in the year of enrolment and have been out of school for at least a year.

Course requirements

Upon completion of your VCE you will receive an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). An ATAR ranges from 0 to 99.95 in increments of 0.05.  Higher education and some TAFE courses set a minimum ATAR to determine eligibility for entry into courses.

If you do not want to undertake a tertiary course you can complete VCE without obtaining an ATAR.  If you select this option you will receive a 'satisfactory' or 'not satisfactory' on completion of each unit instead of an ATAR.

Adult VCE students returning to study

For adults returning to study you must complete a minimum of four subjects including English.

Course structure:

  • each subject is made up of two units - Unit 3 and Unit 4
  • each unit is completed in one semester
  • Unit 3 must be completed before Unit 4 in the same year
  • science and maths have prerequisites.  This means Unit 1 and Unit 2 in science and maths must be completed before Unit 3 and Unit 4.
