Overview

This unit introduces concepts of pricing building and civil engineering construction works. Pricing of construction projects consists of activities including unit rate build up and analysis. The unit facilitates critical thinking and analytical skills of students through preparing and assessing unit rates by analysing material, labour, plant and equipment inputs used in different building and civil engineering construction elements. Principles and concepts encompass analysis of building cost indices, pricing project elements including site overheads (preliminaries) and head office overheads, and effects of building morphology on cost parameters.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Critique the different strategies used to conduct construction project cost planning in the pre-contract stages;
  2. Analyse building elemental rates considering location and time indices for different building morphologies; and
  3. Compute unit rates for building and civil engineering works including preliminaries based on available construction cost guides and schedules.
