Why now’s a great time to study business

AI, automation and other technological innovations are rapidly changing the world of business. It can be easy to fall down the rabbit hole of wondering how this is going to disrupt the workforce – but it’s not all bad news.

What we’ll always need are human decision makers: skilled, critical thinkers and problem solvers. People who can bring new perspectives and find powerful ways to create and deliver new business solutions.

Sure, AI will take over repetitive, predictable tasks in our workforce like data entry. But there’s plenty of jobs that’ll always require the human touch – from resolving conflicts as a HR professional to connecting with people’s needs and desires as a marketer.

Studying business is a great way to develop and nurture those essential soft skills you need to succeed in the new world of AI and technological disruption.

The average person changes careers five to seven times in their life. The good news? Studying business sets you up with transferrable skills. So even if your career takes a few turns (and let’s be honest, it probably will), you’ll graduate with skills that never go out of style like:

  • Strategic thinking, planning and problem-solving

  • Digital literacy and using industry tools
  • Budgeting, planning and project management

These are skills employers love in every industry, so you can future proof your career.

Start where you are: flexible pathways that make sense

Already working and thinking about upskilling or switching up your career? You’ll find a pathway to studying business that fits your journey – often with credits towards your degree.

Maybe you’ve been in the hospo industry a while and already have a TAFE course under your belt. If a business degree is on your radar, you can find an entry point into studying business that takes your existing experience and qualifications into account.

Here’s how it could look:

  1. You start with a Diploma of Hospitality Management SIT60322 through VU TAFE.
  2. You then decide you want to upskill further to open more career opportunities.
  3. You then transition into a Bachelor of Business, with 144 credit points from your diploma going towards your degree to cut down your study time.
  4. You choose a major that fits your vision for the future, whether you continue to focus on hospitality or try something new like HR or supply chain and logistics.

Wherever you’ve come from and wherever you’re going – you’ll find a study journey that’s designed to grow with you.

Everyone’s journey looks different and that’s something to celebrate. Whether you’re dreaming of running your own company, working overseas, or making your mark in your local community, a business degree can take you there.
