Chinese Bridge is an international Chinese-language and -culture competition. The prize is a trip to China.

The competition is hosted by the Hanban Institute in China. It provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their Chinese language and cultural skills through speeches and other diverse talents, such as dance or music.

Chinese Bridge also organises a Principals Tour for heads of educational institutions to visit Chinese schools.

VBCI provides free language coaching to successful applicants.

Chinese Bridge competition & tour categories

The Foreign College Students competition includes:

  • Chinese language proficiency 
  • general knowledge about China 
  • Chinese cultural talents.

Students who win the preliminary rounds held in their countries qualify to go to China for the semi-finals and finals. Winners are offered scholarships for further study in China.

Eligibility

To the competition is open to students who meet these criteria:

  • university student
  • aged between 18 and 30
  • born in a country other than China
  • first language is not Chinese.

Competition rounds

Preliminary rounds are organised by Confucius Institutes, such as the VBCI, and Chinese Embassies in host countries.

Finals are held each July in China.

  • secondary-school student
  • between 15 and 20 years old
  • born in a country other than China
  • first language is not Chinese.

Competition rounds

Preliminary rounds are organised by Confucius Institutes such as VBCI and Chinese embassies in host countries.

Finals are held in October in China. Participants will be accompanied by a teacher.

Tour to China

The Principals Tour is a one-week tour open to leaders in education.

During their visit, participants will:

  • visit the Hanban main office
  • attend Chinese educational and cultural seminars
  • visit Chinese schools to exchange ideas and establish partnerships.

Eligibility

The tour is open to heads of Chinese programs, departments, schools and universities who meet these criteria:

  • committed to establishing a Chinese program
  • have a valid passport
  • under 60 years old and in good health for travel.
