Lived experiences of obsessive-compulsive & related disorders in Australia

Take part in the study

If you are aged 18+, live in Australia, and identify with one of the mental health issues mentioned above, you might be eligible to take part in this research.

This study is investigating experiences and attitudes that affect people living with obsessive-compulsive and related disorders in Australia.

We would like to hear from adults with a lived experience of the following mental health issues to understand if and how other people treat you differently:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Hoarding disorder
  • Hair pulling disorder (also called “trichotillomania”)
  • Skin picking disorder (also called “dermatillomania”)
  • Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).

It is hoped that this research will help shine a light on what it’s like to live with obsessive-compulsive and related disorders in Australia to guide anti-stigma practices in healthcare and mental healthcare settings, workplaces, in the media, online, and in personal relationships.

What does the study involve?

You will be asked to complete a confidential online survey. The survey will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

The online survey will ask questions about:

  • your demographic information
  • your obsessive-compulsive and related mental health symptoms
  • how other people treat you (both positively and negatively) because of  your lived experience of these mental health issues
  • your own and other’s attitudes towards people living with obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

Questions about stigma will cover a range of important areas of your life, such as:

  • your relationships with friends and family
  • employment and workplace experiences
  • your treatment in medical and healthcare services
  • your treatment in mental healthcare services
  • what you’ve seen in social media and mass media.
