Subjects with an Indigenous focus, volunteering & training

We deliver Aboriginal subjects, including Aboriginal politics, traditions and policy, health and education using de-colonial approaches to learning and teaching.

We also support volunteering opportunities for students and deliver cultural awareness workshops to VU staff.

The Woiwurrung language, spoken by the Wurundjeri people, has been used to name Indigenous programs at Victoria University. Permission has been given to Moondani Balluk by Elders, to retell Kulin creation stories and to perform ceremonies on University land.

Student volunteering with VU Extra ‘Seeds to Success’ program

We co-deliver the Seeds to Success program, where students learn about native plants and assist with the restoration of the native grasslands in the Cairnlea area.

Seeds to Success happens at the Iramoo Native Plant Nursery at VU's St Albans Campus. The nursery’s work is shaped through collaboration with Traditional Owners — grounded in practical exchange, rather than theory. Teams from Wurundjeri’s The Narrap Unit (an Indigenous land management team specifically focusing on Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people) work alongside the nursery and land management team, sharing knowledge and learning through the process of restoring the site.

Seeds to Success is a VU Extra activity and can be included in academic records when you finish your studies.

Cultural awareness workshops & training for VU staff

Cultural awareness workshops and training are available to staff at VU through VU Develop.

The Yulendj Warrung online Indigenous Cultural Awareness program is designed to raise awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in the teaching, learning and community engagement of all University staff. The program offers participants the opportunity to hear from Aboriginal staff about the historical and contemporary experiences of Aboriginal peoples.
