The IT Research Project 1 unit is designed for marking the pinnacle of IT students' programming and research expertise, encompassing diverse IT techniques like computer vision, natural language processing, blockchain, cyber security, data mining, database design, etc. Whenever possible, projects are sourced from industry partners, establishing a vital link between academic learning and real-world IT challenges. Its primary objectives are to establish a robust foundation for students to address specific research challenges, enhance their skills in theoretical application, problem-solving, and communication, and fortify other essential professional capabilities for their career advancement.
Situated within the structured framework of a two-part unit (NIT6001 and NIT6002), students taking IT Research Project 1 focus on planning, literature review, methodology designing, data collection, preliminary data analysis and experiments, which are essential components for a successful IT project completion. By the unit's conclusion, students are expected to submit a comprehensive report encompassing a literature review, research problem formulation, establishment of research methods, data collection and preliminary analysis, and preliminary studies and verification of the proposed methods. The report of this unit will feed into the report of NIT6002.
Upon successful completion of NIT6001, students smoothly transition to IT Research Project 2 (NIT6002), where they conduct comprehensive study of the research problems and deliver the final outcomes.
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
Resolve a specific IT research problem based on appropriately selected research methodology;
Critically reflect an understanding of the research process and a systematic approach to the investigation of their specialised area;
Articulate existing literature to identify gaps and challenges, relevant to the research problem;
Design a research proposal, including problem statement, methodology, and preliminary analysis; and
Conclude and recommend research findings to both specialised and non-specialised audiences.
IT Research Project 1 is typically the first of a two-unit research project. On the completion of the second unit IT Research Project 2, students receive the final grade which includes work and assessment conducted during this unit.
