Learn to surf at Urbnsurf

Part of thrive*'s new excursion series, bite-sized adventures for all VU students to try something different and meet people along the way. 

You'll get a 90 minute lesson with a coach in gentle, rolling white-water waves at URBNSURF's wave pool. No ocean, no crowds, just steady, beginner-friendly waves and an instructor talking you through it. We travel together by bus, so you can arrive as a stranger and leave with a surf buddy. 

How the day works

  • 12.15pm We meet by the Car Park at Footscray Park Campus.
  • 12.30pm Bus leaves from Footscray Park. 
  • Check in at the welcome desk. 
  • Pick up your wetsuit and board, and get changed. 
  • Mandatory safety briefing at the lifeguard tower. 
  • 2.30-4pm Surf session starts on time. 
  • Change, shower, and grab food at the restaurant, or have a snack from us by the bus (think donuts and juice). 
  • 5pm Bus leaves URBNSURF and gets us back to Footscray Park around 5.30pm. 

Getting there 

We travel together by bus from the Car Park at Footscray Park Campus. Please meet there by 12.15pm. 

The bus leaves at 12.30pm sharp, so please be there a little earlier. Surf sessions and the safety briefing start on the dot, and we can't join late. 

What to bring

  • Towel 
  • Swimmers 
  • Sun cream 

Wetsuit and softboard hire are included. Your coach will suggest the best board for your ability. Helmets are available.  

Locker hire: Free for everyone. 

Deposit 

A $20 deposit secures your place and is refunded after you attend. Cancellations within 72 hours of the event forfeit the deposit. Places are limited, so the deposit helps us manage attendance and avoid last-minute gaps.

Accessibility details 

Support workers are welcome at no cost. This event counts as a valid university activity, so Auslan interpreting and other access support you're already entitled to applies here too. 

Wheelchair accessible toilets, life jackets and accessible changerooms are available. There are also accessible changerooms with heated showers. 

One-on-one coaching is available for some disabilities, with in-water assistance from a support worker. Do you need any support to participate in this event? Please tell us your requirements when you register.
