Eligibility requirements

In order to apply for a loan, you must be enrolled at VU in a higher education or TAFE course. Students enrolled in a short full fee course are not eligible for a student loan.

You must also be able to demonstrate your ability to repay with loan within the specified time.

To apply for a loan you'll need to:

  • complete the application form in full
  • provide proof of your income such as payslips and statements
  • provide evidence of what the loan will be used for.

Loans will not be approved to cover university fees or fines. If it is clear that you cannot repay the loan, you'll need to explore other options such as an advance from Centrelink or borrowing from family as your loan will not be approved.

You should also attend a financial assistance appointment with one of our Student Welfare staff.

You can get a loan to help you with purchasing books, computers and course related materials, with medical costs or housing costs.

Guarantors

Guarantors are required for all loans greater then $300 and for all borrowers aged under 18 years.

Your guarantor:

  • must be a permanent resident of Australia or Australian citizen.
  • must not be a student from any educational institution or staff member of Victoria University unless the staff member is a relative.

Guarantor forms must be completed and signed by a Justice of Peace (pharmacist, doctor). International students are not required to provide a guarantor.

Payment options

Your student loan can be paid as a bookshop voucher by Victoria University bookshops to enable you to purchase books and study related materials. Your loan can also be paid straight into your bank account, for items other than books and study related materials (bills, rent, computers).
