Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes skills and knowledge required to apply safe work practices when operating metalwork machinery and equipment used in a technology teaching environment. It requires the ability to apply all relevant safety guidelines and procedures when setting up, operating and shutting down metalwork machinery and equipment used while carrying out the activities of a metalwork project. This unit applies to registered teachers and support technicians (non-teaching) using metalwork machinery and equipment in a technology teaching environment. This unit is not intended to provide vocational competencies to operate metalwork machinery in a non-school environment.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work-based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • demonstrate safe work practices using a minimum of three (3) examples of static machines and a minimum of three (3) examples of portable equipment to complete a metalwork project;
  • plan a metal work project including obtaining resources;
  • conduct safety checks on portable and static equipment;
  • demonstrate post-use cleaning and maintenance of the portable and static equipment.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic e-Learning system.
