Learn how to safely operate a range of woodwork and metalwork machinery and equipment in a secondary classroom setting, with Victoria University's specialised course in Safe Use of Machinery for Technology Teaching 22623VIC.
This professional development course has been designed to maintain your safety accreditation.
As part of this course, you will learn:
- current techniques for the safe operation of machinery
- best practice procedures for classroom safety
- OHS risk management skills
- basic machinery maintenance
- how to supervise safe machinery operations.
This course can be undertaken as a specialisation, providing knowledge and training of safe machinery use in the following:
- metalwork only
- woodwork only
- metalwork and woodwork.
Once completed, you will have the skills and knowledge to maintain a safe learning environment and prevent injuries.

This professional development course is designed for secondary school technology teachers and non-teaching support staff.
As part of your study, you will learn to:
- apply principles and legal requirements of the Occupational, Health and Safety (OHS) Act to the classroom
- safely start up, operate and shut down of a range of woodwork and/or metalwork machinery and equipment
- identify, assess and control hazards and risks when working with machinery and equipment with students
- carry out basic and preventative machinery and equipment maintenance
- transfer safe operating principles to a range of woodwork and/or metalwork machinery and equipment
- access and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when operating machinery and equipment.
Course contents
Upon successful completion students receive a Statement of Attainment for the Course in Safe Use of Machinery in Technology Teaching, a minimum of two (2) units of competency must be achieved, comprising:

one (1) core unit, plus
-
minimum one (1) elective unit which must be selected from the elective units listed below.
Note: This course allows for specialisations:

woodwork, and;
-
metalwork and woodwork.

Learning outcomes
Technology teachers are required to undertake training in the safe use of woodworking and metalworking machinery to manage a safe classroom and prevent injuries. This professional development course has been designed to maintain their safety accreditation.
This course provides secondary school technology teachers with the following knowledge and skills:
apply principles and legal requirements of WHS/OHS to the technology teaching environment

Safely operate a range of machinery (woodwork and/or metalwork)

Identify, assess and control hazards when working with machinery in a classroom setting
-
Undertake basic and/or preventative machinery maintenance
-
Transfer safe operating principles to a range of machines, and
- Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment
The program is delivered though workshops on campus 8:30am - 4:40pm, facilitator led delivery in two options by attending for :

two (2) days to complete one (1) specialisation
- four (4) days to complete two (2) specialisations
Admission & pathways
Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you entry into this course. Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.

Specific Entry Requirement for this course
This course is restricted to persons who meet one of the following requirements:
• Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registered teachers providing student instruction in a technology teaching environment; or
• Pre-service teachers enrolled in a VIT-approved secondary teaching qualification with technology or art and design listed as a method; or
• Technology teaching support technicians (non-teaching) with previous trade experience or demonstrable experience in using the required equipment and are currently employed by a secondary school/college.
It is expected all participants will provide their own basic personal protective equipment (PPE) and wear suitable "Worksafe" attire to participate in a workshop.
