Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to interpret the composition and effects of cosmetic products in order to provide accurate advice and achieve positive outcomes for clients in beauty therapy treatments.
It requires the ability to investigate and interpret information about active ingredients in cosmetic products and their application. Cosmetic products are selected and used in the design and application of facial, hand and foot and body treatments in order to achieve agreed treatment outcomes.
This unit applies to workers in nail, make-up, and beauty salons. In these environments, they work in a team but have responsibility for maintaining their own product and treatment knowledge.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
• access and document information on chemical composition and effects of cosmetic products from a comprehensive professional range for at least one of the following:
-nail care
-make-up
-skin care
• apply organic chemistry knowledge to the design of beauty therapy treatments for at least five clients with varying skin types and requirements
for each of the above clients:
-identify client needs and constraints
-identify contraindications
• assess formulation, function and action of range of cosmetic ingredients for suitability
-select suitable cosmetic products with formulation and functions to suit client skin types and requirements
-advise on features, benefits and action on the skin
-provide accurate treatment and post-treatment care advice
• develop or update treatment plans and records for each of the above clients, specifying:
-skin type and conditions
-areas requiring special treatment
-contraindications
-cosmetic products
-formulations, types and strengths
-treatment sequence
-treatment duration
-expected actions on skin
-after-care advice.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VUPolytechnic and/or via the VU Polytechnic e-learning system.
