Overview

An introductory mathematics unit that contextualises concepts and skills in Algebra and Calculus by utilising applications in Engineering and Science. Students will manipulate and solve various algebraic expressions and utilise these to sketch various polynomials and other functions. An introduction to vectors and their practical applications will be applied. An introduction to calculus using rules for differentiation and the concepts of integration will be made. This will include the relationship between integration and differentiation. Also, students will use various calculators (for example; Scientific, Graphics, Desmos, etc) in assisting the successful completion of learning activities and assessments.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Solve and graph a variety of mathematical functions;
  2. Solve simple vector calculations;
  3. Perform and evaluate basic differentiation and integration; and
  4. Apply algebra and calculus to engineering and science related problems.
