This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to confirm, conduct and monitor intervention strategies to address alcohol and other drugs (AOD) issues.  This unit applies to workers who provide support to people with AOD issues within the scope of an established individual treatment plan. Interventions would be ongoing and be conducted under the guidance of a supervisor.

Assessment

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce and extend knowledge and skill competence within set and controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes and performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines. Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills: - planned, conducted and monitored interventions for at least 2 people with AOD issues as detailed in their treatment plan, using evidence based interventions, at least 1 of which, must be motivational interviewing.Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge: - legal and ethical considerations (international, national, state/territory, local) in AOD work, and how these are applied in organisations and individual practice: - roles and responsibilities of people involved in the intervention: - types of information and terminology found in client treatment plan and how to interpret these; - factors that may influence a client's ability to participate in an intervention; - theoretical frameworks about motivation to change alcohol and/or other drug use; - treatment interventions, and their use, appropriate to AOD and scope of role; - techniques for motivational interviewing/counselling; - strategies to support clients during interventions; - strategies for managing difficult situations, and; - types and availability of service to which client may be referred.
