Human research ethics

This section outlines these areas:

  • values and principles underpinning human research ethics
  • human research ethics approval and review process.

You should also refer to Victoria University's guide to research ethics in the time of COVID-19.

  • Human research at VUAll research involving or impacting on humans must be performed in an ethical manner.

  • VU Human Research Ethics Committee (VUHREC)The Committee ensures that research projects involving humans adhere to ethical and legal requirements.

  • HREC application & approval processTo conduct any research involving humans as participants, you must obtain approval from the VU Human Research Ethics Committee (VUHREC).

  • External human research ethics approvalFour types of research projects, previously approved (external to VU research projects), require review by VUHREC.

  • HREC post-approval reporting & proceduresChief Investigators of approved applications ensure projects continue to meet the requirements of VU’s Human Research Ethics Committees.
