Mental health education in Victorian secondary schools

We're looking for recent graduates from independent Victorian secondary schools who can share their experiences of school-based mental health education.

The aim of the study is to examine recent graduates' experiences of mental health education in independent Victorian secondary schools. Specifically, how it was structured and organised, the content covered, and the teaching approaches used. We're also looking for perspectives on its effectiveness and how it could be improved.

About the project

Mental health education is increasingly recognised as an important part of secondary schooling. However, we know very little about how students actually experience it. Student perspectives are largely absent from research in this area, despite students being the primary recipients of these programs.

This study responds to that gap, seeking to understand what young people need and want from their mental health education, and to generate insights that can inform more relevant, responsive and effective approaches to its design and delivery.

This research has been approved by the Victoria University Human Research Ethics Committee (HRE26-054).
