Prerequisites
(Or equivalent to be determined by unit coordinator)
Co-requisites
(Corequisite units must be studied concurrently with this unit)
Overview
This unit provides students with practical experience in applying engineering design principles within teams. Through a project-based learning approach, students design, develop, and test an engineering solution that integrates electrical circuits, programming, and measurement systems. Emphasis is placed on teamwork, ethical practice, safety, and sustainability within a professional context.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Contextualise science and engineering fundamentals through problem solving and by utilising a systems approach;
- Apply advanced knowledge and technical expertise to develop creative, sustainable, and ethical solutions for electrical engineering problems;
- Collaborate effectively as an individual in diverse teams, with accountability for personal and team accomplishments;
- Integrate Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and professional responsibilities of engineers in problem solving; and
- Articulate solutions clearly (orally and in writing) to professional and non-professional audiences.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Assessment type: Laboratory Work | Grade: 30%
Practical Lab Assessment (Individual)) (1500 words)
Assessment type: Project | Grade: 50%
Report (20%) and Presentation & Project Demonstration (30%) (Group) (15 mins)
Assessment type: Test | Grade: 20%
In-class invigilated test (Individual) (60 mins)
Laboratory Work: This assessment ensures accountability by requiring students to perform hands on and lab tasks under supervision. Real-time observation and process-focused questioning verify understanding and application of analytical skills
Project: This secure assessment ensures authenticity through documented milestone checks tied to individual students, in-class feedback sessions incorporating process-focused questioning, and engagement with clients to simulate real-world practice. Students produce industry-standard outputs, and their work is further validated through peer evaluations, feedback and explicit evaluation of each student’s individual contributions and achievement of learning outcomes. This secure assessment features an oral presentation, followed by unpredictable Q&A to assess each student’s understanding and critical reasoning.
Test: This secure invigilated in class assessment has an unpredictable problem-solving scenario format that tests deep understanding, requires explanation of reasoning and process, and involves applying knowledge to new contexts.
