Overview
In this unit, you will explore how analogue and digital systems combine to power modern electronic technologies. You will design and analyse analogue circuits using operational amplifiers, feedback networks, and filters while learning how digital logic, Boolean algebra, and sequential systems form the basis of intelligent hardware. Through simulation using SPICE- based tools and laboratory-based projects, you will build, test, and refine mixed-signal prototypes that respond to real-world design challenges.
You will consider performance, energy efficiency, and reliability in your design choices while using experimentation and critical analysis to refine system behaviour. By the end of this unit, you will be able to design, simulate (using contemporary software) and integrate analogue and digital systems that demonstrate technical precision, resource awareness, and sound professional practice.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Design and test analogue circuits using amplifiers, filters, and feedback to meet performance and safety criteria;
- Apply digital logic, Boolean algebra, and sequential design to implement functional, inclusive digital systems;
- Model and interpret analogue and digital behaviour using SPICE-based tools to inform collaborative design decisions;
- Validate prototypes experimentally, documenting and communicating results using clear technical and visual language; and
- Integrate analogue and digital subsystems to deliver reliable, human-centred mixed-signal solutions through teamwork and professional accountability.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Assessment type: Exercise | Grade: 15%
In-class signal analysis and fault-diagnostic task (Individual) (45 mins)
Assessment type: Portfolio | Grade: 35%
Mixed-signal prototype portfolio including design and measurement data (Group) (1500 words)
Assessment type: Test | Grade: 50%
In-class invigilated test of applied analysis and interpretation of system performance (Individual) (120 mins)
Exercise: This secure assessment ensures accountability by requiring students to perform signal analysis and fault diagnostic tasks under supervision. Real-time observation and process-focused questioning verify understanding and application of analytical skills.
Portfolio: Structured portfolio documenting students’ design processes in detail, supported by progressive milestone checks with regular feedback and validation discussions. Explicit evaluation of individual contributions further supports the assessment and assurance of each student’s achievement of learning outcomes.
Test: This secure invigilated in class assessment has an unpredictable problem-solving scenario format that tests understanding, requires explanation of reasoning and process, and involves applying knowledge to new contexts.
