The Victoria Business Confucius Institute (VBCI) regularly delivers business workshops with a focus on 'Doing Business with China'.

This workshop will discuss the implications a shrinking and ageing population will have not only for the Chinese economy but also for the rest of the world.

It will also present the policy options that the Chinese government could take to respond the demographic trends.

About the host & panellists

: Prof Xuejin Zuo holds a MA in economics from the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS) in 1982 and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1989.

He spent a postdoctoral year at the Princeton University and another year at the US Bureau of the Census as a visiting fellow, before returning back to China in 1991.

He served as the Vice President, Executive Vice President and Acting President of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences during 1994-2012, and the director of the Institute of Economics at the Academy during 2000-2013. He has long been involved in the research on China’s population economics, social security program reform and urban and regional development studies.

He led the key research project The Economic Features and the Supporting System of an Aging Society sponsored by China’s National Natural Science Foundation and several other research projects sponsored by National Social Science Foundation.

Prof Xuejin Zuo was the Vice President of China Population Association, the President of Shanghai Association of Gerontology, the President of the Shanghai Association of Quantitative Economics, and on the Board of Directors of the China Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics, China Health Insurance Research Association, and China Association of Labor Economics.
: Dr Xiujian Peng is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre of Policy Studies (CoPS), Victoria University (VU).

She has extensive experience in the development and application of computable general equilibrium (CGE) models. Xiujian is responsible for the CoPS research on China economy.

She has led and completed many research projects which cover various economic issues in China.

Her recent article published in The Conversation China’s population is about to shrink for the first time since the great famine struck 60 years ago. Here’s what it means for the world has attracted more than one million views worldwide.
: Prof Colin Clark is the Director of Victoria Business Confucius Institute, Victoria University.

Prior to taking on the role of Director of VBCI, Colin had previously served as Dean, International and Deputy Dean and Executive Dean of the former Faculty of Business and Law at VU.

Colin has been active within the accounting profession and is a former Vice President of CPA Australia and a past President of the Victorian Division of CPA Australia.

He is a past member of the Australian Accounting Standards Board Advisory Group. Colin's research interests focus on public sector accounting and corporate governance. He has completed a number of international projects.
