Architecture, Religion, Tourism and Women

Special Collections books, displayed in the cabinet located near the ‘self-check’ machine, were selected by Dana, Engineering and Science librarian and Josie, campus library staff.

The display includes the following titles:

• My Religion by L.N. Tolstoï - translated by Huntington Smith
• Vitruvius: the ten books on architecture
• 100 women
• The lighthouses of Victoria: a second book of paintings, poetry and prose
• Ferries on the Yarra.

Early Childhood, Medicine, Psychology, Literature and History

The books, selected by Lou – VU Business School and VU College librarian, Sally – senior librarian, Kirstin – Health and Sport librarian, and Liz – information resources librarian, are within the cabinet in the Learning Hub.

The books reflect the various themes featuring across the Special Collections and the varied expertise and interests of library staff. Titles on display include:

• The British Empire in Australia: an economic history 1834-1939
• Aboriginal Australians: a history since 1788
• The working brain: an introduction to neuropsychology
• A child's mind: how children learn during the critical years from birth to age five
• Essays on the anatomy of expression in painting
• Wuthering Heights
• Mansfield Park.

Transport, Nutrition, Beauty, Religion

The cabinet near the staircase and the lift showcases the books chosen by Jennifer – Educational Services librarian and Special Collections librarian and Meg – Health and Sport librarian.

While the display includes mostly books related to transport, there are also books from the ‘Little Blue Book’ series and a cookbook. Books on display include:

• Tall ships and steamboats
• The Australian book of trains
• Story of Gippsland shipping: discoveries of the early navigators, lakes steamers, coastal windjammers, shipwrecks and famous captains
• Murray river paddle steamers
• Handbook on the locomotive: issued for the guidance of enginemen in the description, maintenance and economical operation of the locomotive
• Don Dunstan's cookbook
• The care of the skin and hair: and other general health hints
• The essence of Buddhism.

Building, History, Literature, Tourism

John – Business librarian, Leanne – campus library staff and Kim – university archivist selected the books displayed in the cabinet located opposite the second library entrance and on the way to P228.

Their selection consists of books about building, history, literature and tourism such as:

• Australia's home: its origins, builders and occupiers
• The age of Arthur: a history of the British Isles from 350 to 650
• The Iliad and Odyssey of Homer
• The Melbourne guide book: with pictorial map of the city, bird's-eye view of Hobson's Bay, bird's-eye views of the streets and other illustrations.
