TAFE scholarships
Victoria University (VU) offers a range of equity and merit scholarships for vocational and further education students (TAFE) who are in financial need.
On this page we list the TAFE scholarships available, eligibility requirements, the value, how to apply and deadlines.
Applications for VU Equity scholarships can be submitted by TAFE students enrolled in certificate I, II, III, IV, diploma and advanced diploma courses for six months or longer.

VU Access scholarships for TAFE students
Access scholarships are available for vocational education (VE) and further education (FE) students who are in financial need.
Types of VU Access scholarships available
- Western Region: Available if you completed Year 12 in the Western Region of Melbourne in the year before enrolling at VU. "Western Region" includes western metropolitan suburbs of Melbourne, the City of Hume, Moorabool Shire, Sunbury and Macedon Ranges areas.
- Mature Age: Available if you are over 21 years of age and have had a break from full-time study for more than five years.
- Pathway: Available if you have completed a VU TAFE course and are transferring to a VU Undergraduate degree in the same or the following year.
- Parents: Available if you have dependent children (school age or under school age).
- Youth: Available if you are under 21 years of age and have not completed year 12.
- General: Available if you are not eligible for any of the other VU Access scholarship types.
Eligibility
To apply for a VU Access scholarship you must:
- be either an Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident, holder of a Permanent Humanitarian Visa, holder of a Bridging or other Temporary visa
- be on a Centrelink payment or be able to show that you are on a low income and in financial need
- be enrolled in an eligible VE or FE course for six months or longer
- be enrolled full time (does not apply if you are registered with VU Disability Services)
- be enrolled in a non fee paying place.
You cannot apply for a VU Access Scholarship if you:
- have already completed a TAFE course, or higher education course that is at a higher level of study than the course in which you are currently enrolled
- are enrolled as an apprentice or trainee
- are enrolled in a pre-apprenticeship course of less than six months study
- are enrolled as a full fee paying student
- are enrolled as an international student.
Value
There are 100 VU Access scholarships available each year for VE and FE students, valued at $1,000 per year for up to two years.
Assessment
Assessment is not based on academic merit. Applications are ranked and scored based on financial income, educational background and social disadvantages. Those with the highest levels of disadvantage are ranked higher. Scholarships are offered to the highest ranked applicants, until all scholarships are allocated. Some eligible students may miss out if there are more eligible applicants than scholarships available.
You only need to submit one application for all scholarships available. Your application will be assessed against all of the scholarships available. If eligible, you will receive only one scholarship.

VU Achievement scholarships
VU offers merit scholarships known as VU Achievement Scholarships.
Each secondary school in the western region council areas of Brimbank, Hobson's Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham will be offered two scholarships:
- one for the highest achieving year 12 student who enrols in a VU Higher Education (HE) course
- one for the highest achieving year 12 student who enrols in a VU Vocational Education (VE) course.

VU Western Chances scholarships
Western Chances support students from the western region of Melbourne to study at secondary level. Scholarships are provided in partnership with VU for students to continue tertiary studies.
Eligibility
To apply for a VU Western Chances scholarships you must:
- have received a Western Chances Scholarship in your secondary school studies
- be enrolled full-time in a VU course.
Value
Each year we provide up to 25 VU Western Chances Access Scholarships, valued at $1,000 per year for up to four years.

If you think you are eligible you must apply through Western Chances.
John Byrne scholarship for refugees
The John Byrne memorial seeks to support a VU TAFE student from a refugee background to complete their studies.
Eligibility
To apply for the John Byrne scholarship you must be:
- enrolled in a VU TAFE course of at least twelve months duration
- aged between 25 and 35
- a refugee who has arrived in Australia in the last five years
- able to demonstrate that you are experiencing financial difficulty.
Value
One award valued at $1,000.

Zonta club of Melbourne's west Moira Perillo award for women
The Zonta club seeks to support a female VU TAFE student to complete their studies in a non traditional area.
Eligibility
To apply for the Zonta Club Moira Perillo scholarship you must:
- be a female student
- reside in the western suburbs of Melbourne
- be enrolled in the second year of a two year VU TAFE course, in a non-traditional field of study.
Value
One award valued at $500.

David Hay Scholarships for Freight, Logistics, Transport and Supply Chain students
The David Hay Scholarship is an award made available by the generosity of Christine Hay, David Hay’s widow, who wishes to assist those wanting to pursue further studies, from Diploma to PhD, specialising in Freight, Logistics, Transport and Supply Chain in 2013. Preference will be given to applicants “who aspire to advance their career in the Supply Chain, Logistics and Transport industry”.
Eligibility
To apply for the David Hay Scholarship you must:
- be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident in Australia
- have the capacity to undertake study in the agreed period and abide by the rules of the David Hay Endowment Fund
The David Hay Scholarship is designed to support the person not the firm. Employers cannot use this scholarship as a substitute for funding professional development.
Value
The scholarship will fund the course fees for the successful applicant(s). Additional support may be offered as determined by the David Hay Endowment Management Committee, after having regard to all relevant factors including the individual Scholar’s personal circumstances

The Victoria University Sport Scholarships
The Victoria University Sport Scholarships and elite athlete support program is in place to assist outstanding VU athletes balance their studies with the demands of elite level sport and to assist emerging student athletes in their aim to perform at the elite sporting level.
Sport Scholarships aim to assist student athletes with financial and in kind support with respect to competition and training fees, health and fitness, international travel and University representation.
Scholarship Categories
Elite High Performance Scholarship
The Elite High Performance Scholarships are the University’s Peak sporting scholarships awarded to one (1) outstanding male and female student athlete.
Emerging Elite Scholarship
The Emerging Elite Scholarships are for emerging student-athletes demonstrating significant potential to reach elite levels. Available for two (2) males and two (2) females.
Aspiring Elite (Equity based)
These Scholarships are awarded to students who come from one or more defined equity or personal disadvantage groups and who have the potential to reach the elite level in their sport as per emerging elite category. Equal scholarships are provided to males and females, targeting new students with at least 70% drawn from the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. Available to six (6) students (minimum two (2) female). Equity groups may include: Indigenous Australian decent, non- English speaking background, challenging family circumstances, financially disadvantaged, regional or remote origin, disability or medical condition.
