This unit describes the skills and knowledge to develop reading and writing skills such as analysis, critical thinking, research, and academic writing essential for tertiary study.
The unit applies to persons seeking to enter tertiary study through alternative pathways who will need to acquire academic reading and writing skills in order to successfully complete their tertiary studies.No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.
Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
• access, analyse, synthesise, and integrate information from at least three different academic sources, including at least one digital source, using correct referencing conventions
• apply critical thinking and analytical skills to respond to a minimum of two distinct academic tasks, demonstrating interpretation, evaluation, and logical reasoning
• produce at least two written academic responses that reflect academic structure, conventions, and features appropriate to the tasks, using consistent and accurate referencing.
The evidence must be collected over time and demonstrate the integration of reading, writing, and research skills in response to academic questions.
The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
