Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge to use functional numeracy for everyday familiar situations and needs. It includes the ability to apply simple numerical information to work with money, time, directions, and measurement.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • apply simple strategies to undertake one familiar task related to money, time and measurement.
  • apply simple strategies to give and receive directions to two different locations.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • common representations of monetary amounts.
  • size, shape, and colour related to money.
  • 24-hour clock related to digital time.
  • mathematical symbols for addition and subtraction to perform simple calculations.
  • language of position to convey information about directions.
  • common units of measurement.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
