Overview
This unit develops your capability to analyse and model how materials and mechanical components behave under complex loading conditions. You will apply advanced stress analysis and finite element methods (FEM) to evaluate performance, validate results, and enhance the reliability of mechanical designs.
Through simulation-based problem solving, you will strengthen your ability to question assumptions, connect theory with practice, and approach challenges from multiple perspectives. Emphasis is placed on effective finite element modelling, encouraging design choices that prioritise safety, efficiency, and long-term impact. Collaborative projects foster professional judgement and communication skills, preparing you to make evidence-based decisions that support innovation and integrity in mechanical engineering.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- Analyse stress, strain and deformation under complex loading using analytical methods and numerical computation techniques;
- Develop and validate finite element models to predict component response, ensuring appropriate material selection and boundary conditions;
- Evaluate simulation results to assess reliability, optimise performance, and inform design improvement; and
- Collaborate on research-informed finite element investigations to develop innovative, evidence-based engineering recommendations.
Assessment
For Melbourne campuses
Assessment type: Exercise | Grade: 20%
Application of advanced stress analysis principles to solve a practical FEM problem (Individual) (30 mins)
Assessment type: Portfolio | Grade: 30%
Structured portfolio of analytical stress analysis and FEM problem-solving tasks with progressive skill development and reflection (Individual) (1500 words)
Assessment type: Project | Grade: 50%
FEM optimisation project including problem definition, model development, design refinement, report (Group) (3000 words) and individual Viva (5mins)
Exercise: This secure in-class assessment ensures authenticity by requiring students to apply analytical and computational reasoning to unseen FEM problems under supervised conditions. Real-time problem-solving and unpredictable parameters verify understanding and capability.
Portfolio: Structured portfolio of written and FEM tasks to evaluate stress analysis, deformation calculations, and result interpretation, supported by regular feedback and validation discussions.
Project: This secure assessment ensures authenticity through documented milestone checks tied to individual students, in-class feedback sessions incorporating process-focused questioning, and verification of individual contributions. Students produce an industry-standard FEM report and presentation, validated through peer and instructor review, and followed by by unpredictable Q&A to assess each student’s understanding and critical reasoning.
