Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to safely operate basic stationary machinery used in industries such as wood machining and cabinet and furniture making. Workers with this competency undertake basic operations. More advanced skills in setting up, maintaining and using machines to their full capacity are covered in units dedicated to specific machine types.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit's learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • safely operate at least 5 of the following static machines on at least 2 occasions each to complete specified tasks to workplace quality standards:
  • band saw
  • crosscut saw
  • panel saw
  • rip saw
  • edge bander
  • hinge borer
  • thicknesser
  • jointer
  • wide belt sander.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VU Polytechnic and/or via the Victoria University Polytechnic e-Learning system.
