This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to produce 2-D computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) code files from existing computer-aided design (CAD) model. It includes managing files and tools, and customising installed software.
The unit typically applies in a manufacturing setting where components are machined or processed within a CAM environment.
Where 2-D CAD models are required to be produced unit MEM09009 Create 2-D drawings using computer-aided design system should also be selected.
Where components are machined following development of code files then appropriate computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining units should also be selected.
Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.
Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:
• following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
• preparing for computer-aided manufacture (CAM) by customising system variables, user interface and software defaults and developing manufacturing data to suit specifications and procedures
• importing 2-D models using various file formats, orienting and manipulating them and linking model entities to data attributes
• applying manufacturing data to detailed models to suit requirements
• producing and saving files in various formats and verifying CAM model for logical sequencing and correct manufacturing procedures
• producing code from completed 2-D CAM model.
The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Victoria University and/or via the Victoria University e-learning system.
