Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work in a primary health care environment including community-based, educational, occupational and informal settings, and in general practice.

Primary health care involves a person-centred and comprehensive approach to health care. It is made accessible to people by being located as close as possible to where they live and supporting their full participation in the spirit of self-reliance and self-determination.

This unit applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) regulatory authority legislative requirements.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
• analyse health information and the clinical presentation of one person to reach a plan of care
• address the needs of one person using primary health care principles
• review and update a plan of care for one person to address primary health care needs

The tasks must be undertaken in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) professional practice standards, codes and guidelines.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VUPolytechnic and/or via the VU Polytechnic e-learning system.
