Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to contribute to the nursing care and treatment of a person with a mental health condition.

This unit applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) regulatory authority legislative requirements.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
• for two different people with a mental health condition, one in the workplace and one in the workplace or simulation:
• use health information and clinical presentation to reach a conclusion of possible nursing interventions reflective of the mental health condition
• analyse, plan and evaluate the health care of people with a mental health condition.

The tasks must be undertaken in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) professional practice standards, codes and guidelines.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:
• application of nursing theory to a mental health context
• social, psychological, cognitive and physical factors associated with mental health conditions
• consumer and carer perspectives on mental health care
• impact of racism, stigma, discrimination, culture and belief systems on a person with a mental health condition
• common mental health conditions by classification and disorder, and their treatment and management:
• mood disorders
• anxiety disorders
• dual diagnosis
• substance abuse disorders
• psychotic disorders
• eating disorders
• organic disorders
• self-harm
• de-escalation response in distress and crisis including:
• communicating
• identifying possible causal factors and addressing where possible
• enlisting support and assistance from colleagues
• managing personal safety and violence prevention
• common behaviours associated with mental health conditions, and the effect of behaviours on the person and others
• techniques for managing challenging behaviours:
• recognising and deflecting triggers
• active listening and observation
• effectively communicating
• seeking expert assistance
• the principles of recovery in the mental health context
• national framework for Australian Government recovery-orientated mental health services
• National Safety and Quality Health Care Service (NSQHC) Standards
• jurisdictional Mental Health Act
• role of Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives (CATSINaM)
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health and cultural safety
• impacts of inter-generational trauma
• key features of mental health legislation:
• assessment and treatment provided in the least intrusive and restrictive way
• people supported to make and participate in decisions about their assessment, treatment and recovery
• individuals’ rights, dignity and autonomy protected and promoted
• priority given to comprehensive care and support options that are responsive to individual needs
• wellbeing and safety of children and young people protected and prioritised
• carers recognised and supported in decisions about treatment and care
• key terms associated with mental health conditions
• strategies for managing individual wellbeing and oral health issues related to medication, adverse effects, and the interplay between mental health and physical states.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VUPolytechnic and/or via the VU Polytechnic e-learning system.
