Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to practise as a nursing professional within the Australian health care system, providing health care across the lifespan of people in health and community care services and environments.

This unit applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) regulatory authority legislative requirements.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
• complete one clinical work placement in professional nursing practice that involves:
• performing two different professional interactions with the registered nurse and multidisciplinary health care team to demonstrate adaptation to nursing role and application of knowledge to nursing practice;
• reflecting on the two professional interactions and identifying how nursing practice contributed health outcomes.

The tasks must be undertaken in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) professional practice standards, codes and guidelines.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:
• Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Enrolled Nurse Standards for Practice
• principles of primary and tertiary health care
• principles of wellness
• alternative, integrative and non-traditional approaches to health care in Australia
• health and illness issues facing people who have come from countries other than Australia
• health issues and impacts for health care delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culturally and linguistically diverse groups
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and principles of cultural safety
• historical and current perspectives of the nursing profession
• development and historical context of the Australian health care system, current health service models and State/Territory standards of care
• health care environments and the roles of the multidisciplinary health care team and personnel associated with health service delivery
• themes that impact health and illness for people from Australia and other countries, including environment, cultural barriers and community acceptance
• social, political and economic impacts on health care delivery including funding sources and constraints on services and resource allocation
• overall structure, strengths and weakness of the Australian health care system and the local area
• current issues which impact health policy development
• National Nursing and Midwifery Digital Health Capability Framework
• how health and illness factors impact people
• roles of regulatory authorities, and industrial and professional bodies
• role of the Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives (CATSINaM)
• national, State/Territory and local health priorities.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the VUPolytechnic and/or via the VU Polytechnic e-learning system.
