Overview

This unit is the first of two capstone units. This unit enables students to integrate their research and clinical knowledge and skills through the development of a project whilst engaged in a 25-day clinical practicum. The professional practicum is assessed at 'towards entry level’ on COMPASS competency assessment tool and students are expected to be close to readiness to enter the profession across all speech pathology areas of practice. This placement may take place in a variety of settings completed under the supervision of speech pathology clinical educators. Placements will involve working in services predominantly focused on providing services to child or adult individuals and their families and will typically involve working alongside professionals from other services, such as allied health, welfare and/or education. Students will join a community of practice with their peers who have related research projects, to develop their collaborative learning practices.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

Exemplify clinical reasoning and competency in speech pathology assessment and intervention at a standard near ready to enter the profession in a predominantly adult or child focused clinical context as defined by the professional standards for speech pathology in Australia;
Critically review the scientific literature related to a contemporary issue in speech pathology practice as a part of a community of practice;
Critically reflect on personal and professional experiences to articulate a coherent professional identity and engage in career development practices that support lifelong learning and employability in diverse speech pathology contexts;
Implement and report on analysis and interpretation of data, procedures and appropriate consideration of research ethics and clinical governance;
Authenticate clinical techniques relating to assessment and implementing intervention relevant to situations where clients present with communication or swallowing concerns.

Viva- in person case-based Viva (40 mins

Assignment- Manuscript detailing rationale and methods of a project (2000 words). Plus active participation in a community of practice. Rubric will include marks and feedback from research mentor on the student’s contributions in a community of practice (Weekly ORT meetings).

This unit has two mapped whole-of-cohort hurdle tasks which align with the Speech Pathology Australia accreditation requirement for must-pass assessments.

Practicum - Viva is a must-pass hurdle requirement for students to contextualise the scope of practice of Speech pathology, demonstrate real-time clinical techniques and apply Professional Standards at “Entry” level equivalent on COMPASS competency assessment tool. Practicum assessment is a must-pass hurdle requirement. Students are required to attend and pass 25 days of supervised professional practicum, assessed on COMPASS at “near-entry” competency or above. This requirement is in accord with the Speech Pathology Australia Accreditation Standards and the Victoria University Assessment for Learning - Standards for Assessment Procedure. In the event of illness, students may be required to make up missed placement hours, as per the Speech Pathology Practice Education guidelines.
