Overview

This unit provides essential knowledge of the anatomy and physiology underpinning human communication and swallowing, situating these concepts within the discipline of speech pathology and its critical role in contemporary healthcare. In the current Australian healthcare and population context, speech pathologists face increasing challenges such as managing complex health conditions, supporting very young, preterm infants, aging populations, and delivering care in diverse and technologically evolving contexts. A thorough understanding of the respiratory, cardiac, phonatory, articulatory, and swallowing systems—and their neurological control, including cranial nerves and motor programming—is fundamental for safe, effective, and evidence-based speech pathology practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. Exemplify understanding of the movements and functions of the structures, joints and muscles of the head, neck and chest including mouth, larynx, and pharynx;
  2. Apply anatomy and physiology knowledge to clinical scenarios to describe impacts to body structure and function;
  3. Examine and integrate foundational understanding of the motor and sensory nerve supply of the head, neck and chest involved in communication and swallowing; and
  4. Articulate the relationships between cardiac, respiratory and digestive systems relevant to speech pathology domains of communication and swallowing.
