The unit develops advanced knowledge of global and contemporary issues shaping early childhood education. Students critically examine the philosophical traditions informing the field, analysing their historical development and contemporary relevance across diverse contexts. The unit fosters students’ capacity to engage with international trends in early childhood research and to identify complex challenges within local and global settings. Students also explore research methodologies and methods to support educational inquiry.
Students undertake a literature review to critically analyse scholarly research, policy and legislative frameworks, government documents, and relevant sector resources. Through structured reflection and academic guidance, they develop a focused research question and apply appropriate research methodologies to investigate a chosen area of interest. They learn to interpret and evaluate findings for informed insights.
The unit culminates in a research report and professional showcase, reinforcing students’ identities as teacher-researchers and strengthening their capacity to act as agents of change in promoting children’s rights and wellbeing. Through reflective, analytical and evidence-informed inquiry, students will develop advanced skills in critical analysis, theoretical engagement and evidence-based professional practice.
