Overview

This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to install insulating sheathing on hot and cold piping, fittings and vessels. It includes the selection of insulation materials.Site location for work application may be either domestic or commercial and may be a new work site or an existing structure being renovated, extended, restored or maintained.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, incl the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.
Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:

  • locating, interpreting and applying relevant information, standards and specifications to selecting, installing, insulating sheathing to piping, fittings and vessels
  • given the plans and specifications, insulating two metres of small-bore heating line with at least one change in direction
  • applying safety requirements throughout the work sequence, including electrical safety requirements and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • two metres of refrigeration line with metal sheath and at least one change in direction.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will advise students of class notes, reading materials produced by Victoria University and further support via Victoria University's e-learning system and/or in person.
