Overview

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to implement work health and safety policies and procedures to support the health, safety and wellbeing of students in an educational environment.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, including the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
*provide health, safety and wellbeing information to two different students on at least one occasion for each student
*follow hazard identification and reporting process on two different occasions, each for a different type of hazard
*follow organisational policies and procedures for one simulated emergency situation.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:
*relevant state/territory legislation, its purpose and key requirements that impact the role of education support workers relating to:
*work health and safety
*child protection
*confidentiality and privacy
*duty of care responsibilities applicable to non-teaching staff
*anti-discrimination
infection control
organisational policies and procedures for work health and safety
organisational emergency procedures and own role in the event of an emergency:
communication procedures
evacuation procedures
the role education support workers in supporting health, safety and wellbeing of students
types of health and safety information that may be provided by education support workers to students
typical personal care and hygiene needs of students
hazard identification, including:
definition and procedure for identification of a hazard
common hazards within the school environment:
infection control risks
personal or student safety risks
strategies to minimise risk
first aid kit content and use
student protection programs
supervision planning, set up and implementation requirements and considerations for different:
age groups
areas
activities
types of health promotion activities undertaken in schools, their key purpose.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system. Students will be provided with two texts books to assist with their learnings: •Karen Kearns Supporting Education text book •English Grammar
