Overview

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare vehicle body surfaces and apply vinyl film wrapping materials. This unit involves preparing for the task, selecting and using specialist tools, selecting vinyl film materials, checking vinyl film quality, and completing workplace processes and documentation.The unit applies to those working in the automotive paint refinishing repair industry.

Assessment

For Melbourne campuses

Assessment tasks will be designed to reinforce & extend knowledge and skill competence within set & controlled parameters in accordance with each unit’s learning outcomes & performance criteria requirements, incl the setting of work based practical application tasks designed to provide evidence of competence outcomes, within periodic and scheduled timelines.

Students will be expected to demonstrate the following required skills:
*complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • apply vinyl film wrapping on at least three different vehicles.

Students will also be expected to demonstrate the following knowledge:
*methods to locate and interpret information required to apply vehicle body film wrapping, including:

  • information provided by customer and supervisors
  • manufacturer specifications and procedures or equivalent documentation
    *workplace procedures required to apply vehicle body film wrapping, including:
  • establishing serviceability of tools and equipment
  • documentation procedures
    *housekeeping procedures, including:
  • examination of tools and equipment
  • storage of equipment
  • identification, tagging and isolation of faulty equipment
  • disposal of excess materials
  • recycling procedures
    *work health and safety (WHS) requirements relating to applying vehicle body film wrapping, including procedures for:
  • selecting and using personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • using specialist tools
  • environmental requirements, including procedures for trapping, storing and disposing of waste material
    *types and uses of vinyl film wrapping materials and tools, including:
  • vinyl film wrapping requirements
  • patterns
  • application tools
  • cleaning agents
    *vinyl film supplier recommended methods and techniques for applying vinyl film wrapping, including:
  • surface preparation
  • surface measurements and pattern development
  • quality requirements relating to vinyl film wrapping
    *procedures for protecting vehicle and components when applying film wrapping
    *procedures for final inspection of vehicle vinyl film wrapping.

Required reading

The qualified trainer and assessor will provide teaching and learning materials as required in the form of workbooks produced by the Polytechnic and/or via the Polytechnic e-learning system.
