Practicum 1 is designed to orientate students to their practicum in a real world counselling setting. The unit will focus on introducing students to counselling case formulation and treatment planning, whilst educating students on factors important in establishing the supervisory relationship at their placement. The unit will address ethical issues in counselling, case note writing, and factors related to counselling assessment (such as the Mental Status Examination and the use of the family genogram). The unit will also introduce students to presenting real life clinical cases in a peer group environment and will introduce students to the practice of actively reflecting on their placement experiences.
